Piddlin'.....with Five on Friday

1) I hate winter! It is way too cold even here in the South. I like to wear my flip flops and see my toes...it has been way too long!
2) I love brick walls in a kitchen. I was watching Paula Deen and noticed her new kitchen has a brick wall, it reminds me of my Mama's kitchen. The long wall of my Mama's kitchen is brick and I have always wanted a kitcheN just like that....no such luck...nine different homes and not one has had a brick wall in the kitchen.
3) I took the ornaments off the two remaining trees but they are still lit up.LOL
4) I had a nutty buddy bar this week....ok I ate the whole box....one of my girlfriends had wrote about it on her facebook and I couldn't help myself from buying a box at the store.
5) I won't be buying anymore nutty buddy boxes....not good to keep in the house....plus it is time for girl scout cookies......

Hissy Fit....

A few days I caught this story out of Charlotte, North Carolina
http://sip-trunking.tmcnet.com/news/2011/01/22/5260528.htm

In the story a teenager supposedly managed to hide in the wheel storage on a flight leaving out of Charlotte , stay there the entire flight, and then fall to his death upon approach in Massachusetts. Of course this is all still being investigated so who knows what really happened at this point....but an extension of the story is what floored me.

The family has decided to sue the airport. Really? When are parents going to take responsibility for their children. Why are they not negligent because their child was putting others in danger? Don't get me wrong, I am sorry for this family's loss....but this is ridiculous!

Piddlin' with Five on Friday

Five on Friday
  1.  Last year I decided to grow my hair out from the short sassy cut I had worn for many years and the strangest thing has happened! My stick straight hair now has a gentle wave throughout it. My sweet husband loves it he said it reminds him of how I had the end touches of a perm when we first met.
  2. My laundry never seems to get done.I do laundry every single day! When I hear people talk about "laundry day" I am extremely jealous.
  3. I made a quinoa salad yesterday in an attempt to eat healthier....it was awful. So awful the birds even ignored it when I threw it out.
  4. I still haven't taken down TWO of my SIX Christmas trees. I love the lights they make me smile.
  5. It is sunny and sixty degrees where I live today :)

Piddlin'.....

I am not a huge movie fan. I don't like to sit still that long and I always need to tinkle therefore missing an important part of the movie. Oh the other hand the guys in my house love movies so I gave in today at the grocery store and let them choose a movie out of the Red-box. Boy am I glad I did, although they did have to pause it three times for my bathroom breaks!
We watched The Town with Ben Affleck. I found it to be very well written and directed. The acting was unbelievable.... Even little Blake Lively was superb!Of course it doesn't hurt that Ben is hotter than the Georgia sunshine!

Putting On Your Face.....

Like many Southern women I love beauty products. I could spend a whole day in a good cosmetics store. Although I try different brands I always come back to my favorite skin care line, Philosophy. I have been using this brand for years an it must be working since I get carded frequently! The potion is creamy and sustainable yet never feels heavy. Don't let the price scare you off a little goes a long way!

Hissy Fit....

I love taking care of my family.... I really do....but every once in awhile I would like a break too. Today, being a snow day, meant a break for my husband and my little dumplin'. They have enjoyed two home-cooked meals, fresh pajamas, video games, and full control of the remote....did I mention it is only three in the afternoon?!?
I on the other hand cooked and cleaned the kitchen (twice!), did a pile of laundry, paid bills, and a million other little things. I never really feel like I can stop....I mean who would dig me out tomorrow from the laundry and dishes?

Hissy Fit....

One of my New Year's resolutions has already been broken.
This year I was going to try not to be swayed by past hurts and grudges.
I am serious! But there it was this morning...a news article on my facebook feed from my hometown paper. Someone that did me very wrong a few years ago on a personal and professional level had a front page screw-up. I could not stop the smile that spread across my face. I laughingly read the article to my husband and called my Mama to see if she had heard the news.
Then I felt ...uncomfortable? sick? sad?
It hit me like a ton of bricks....I was just as bad as this person.
Maybe this means I am ready for the New Year....

Butter My Biscuit......

New Year's Day in the South is a crazy day. We make the "better heath" resolutions at midnight just like the rest of the country then proceed to eat a pork filled traditional meal by noon!
In our home we make black eyed peas cooked with a smoked ham hock, collard greens cooked in smoked turkey wings, cornbread, and some other type of pork as a main course! This year it will be an half of ham but in other years it has been pork chops or a pork butt.
In the South we believe the black eyed peas and collards are symbolic of money and pork is symbolic of progress because pigs root forward when foraging.
Does it work? I like to think so. Our family had a lovely year despite the country being in turmoil. My husband undertook a career change that finally gave him a job he adores. My little dumplin' is thriving in school and is a sweet child that is coming into his own personality. As for myself, I didn't accomplish all the goals I set for myself but I had a hand in the others meeting their potential so I am pretty content about the year as a whole. Looking forward to all the New Year holds...

Collard Greens

Recipe Courtesy of Paula Deen
1/2 pound smoked meat (ham hocks, smoked turkey wings, or smoked neck bones)
1 tablespoon House seasoning *
1 tablespoon seasoned salt
1 tablespoon hot red pepper sauce
1 large bunch collard greens
1 tablespoon butter
Directions
In a large pot, bring 3 quarts of water to a boil and add smoked meat, house seasoning, seasoned salt and hot sauce. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 1 hour.

Wash the collard greens thoroughly. Remove the stems that run down the center by holding the leaf in your left hand and stripping the leaf down with your right hand. The tender young leaves in the heart of the collards don't need to be stripped. Stack 6 to 8 leaves on top of one another, roll up, and slice into 1/2 to 1-inch thick slices. Place greens in pot with meat and add butter. Cook for 45 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. When done taste and adjust seasoning.

*We use Jane's Crazy Salt
